Security Goes To The Dogs
By Anne Pawsey
The usefulness of man’s best friend as a security guard is well known but a recent invention by an Israeli security company really takes the biscuit.
Exploiting the fact that dogs of all shapes and sizes produce the same “alarm bark” when startled, the company Bio-Sense Technologies have produced an alarm system proving once and for all that a dogs bark is worse than its bite.
The system has been installed at the high security Eshel prison but has yet to be put to the test of a genuine escape as no attempts have been made since the system was installed.
Using sensors placed around a facility the system detects an “alarm bark” and alerts a human operator who can then tackle the intruder. It is thought to be more reliable than using human guards alone as dogs have a superior sense of smell and hearing.
However the system is not foolproof and dogs have to be familiarised with their territory otherwise they will frequently be found to be barking up the wrong tree.
