Unidentified non-flying object?

Dear Prof Null,
This is not a joke letter, although I realise it will sound insane. Last night myself and my flatmate saw a fly seemingly freeze in mid air for about 5-10 seconds. We could see it’s grey shadow on the ceiling, quite far away from it, showing us that the fly was not standing on the ceiling. It appeared to be completely motionless. I assumed it was in a web. Then it came to life and flew onto the nearby lamp. I inspected the ceiling and found no trace of webs. Prior to this event we were frying bacon in the open plan kitchen lounge area. I'm not sure if this is relevant, but it is the only other factor I can think of that might have had something to do with the fly being able to suspend itself in mid air without any outward sign of movement.
I must stress, there was no visible movement from either the fly, or the space around the fly, until it later came to life again. No swinging on a web, no flapping etc. Has anyone had a similar experience, or can anyone offer an explanation for this? If anyone has an explanation that involves the fly exhibiting any signs of movement, then this is not what we both witnessed.
If you have witnessed anything similar in your home, let us know and we'll investigate further. Write to us below.
