Phunny Phobias

Phunny Phobias

If you met someone who was afraid of paper or wax statues, wouldn't you tell them to stop being so ridiculous and get over it? Every Monday, Null editor Hayley hand-picks another bizarre phobia and tries to work out whether it's real or rubbish.

This week:

Megalophobia:
fear of large things

What's so scary about it?
It seems pretty straightforward in principal. After all, who isn’t scared of tall people? Oh, maybe that’s just me and my relative size disadvantage.

What do the scientists say about it?

There’s a distinct lack of opinions from scientists on the matter of megalophobia. The only, wholly unscientific, description of this condition is one that suggests megalophobics aren’t actually scared of big things, but things that are bigger than expected, like rapidly approaching aeroplanes.

Hayley says:
"It started out promising, but I have to say I don’t believe a word of it. And what a ridiculous example to give – unless you’re one of those men with the table tennis bats who waves in the planes, how are you ever going to be faced with that horror?  Rubbish."

So far: Real 6  Rubbish 6
