Top 10 Animal Mysteries

Top 10 Animal Mysteries

By Nicola Currie

We all love to sit around and pontificate about the mysteries of the world. Just what important information are the powers that be keeping from us? What strange beings lurk out there in the great outdoors that we just haven't found yet? We celebrate 2500 years of cryptozoology - the 'science' of unexplained animal sightings.

10. The Canvey Island Monster
A creature of unknown origin, it bears comparison to a three-foot fish with legs or a toothy, armless frog.
9. The Megalodon
The daddy all sharks. This sea beast is so large it could swallow a human like a fruit pastille.
8. The Thunderbird
A monkey-eating behemoth that, according to legend, could create thunder by flapping its wings.
7. The Skyfish
Frisky little rod-shaped critters that move so fast they are largely invisible to the human eye.
6. The Giant Sea Centipede
Proof that the ‘its-more-afraid-of-you-than-you-are- of-it’ argument is complete twaddle.
5. The Mothman
A seven-foot winged humanoid with glowing red eyes  set in his chest. What a sweetie!
4. The Sasquatch/Yeti/Bigfoot
One of the more famous figures in our league, this hairy biped has been spotted all over the world.
3. The Mongolian Death Worm
Is the Gobi desert home to a giant, electrocuting, poison-spewing worm that's lethal to the touch?
2. The Loch Ness Monster
You can rock it, you can knock it, you can go to Timbuktu but you’ll never find a Nessie in the zoo.
1. The Alien
Who knows, perhaps us lovely, affable humans are even the enigmatic cryptids of alien nightmare.
