The Apple Won't Brown

The Apple Won't Brown

By Stefanie Jones

Rotting apples in your lunchbox may soon be a thing of the past – according to a group of Australian scientists.

They’ve come up with an apple that does not go brown when cut, something which usually occurs within minutes due to oxidation. Scientists claim the new breed of apple will stay a pale pink colour for several hours after it is exposed to air.

This new type of apple, bred naturally from Lady Williams and Golden Delicious, will be sold under the name ‘Enchanted’, and is expected to be on the market very soon.

Western Australia’s minister for agriculture Kim Chance said he hopes its unique qualities will make it a very attractive prospect for the industry.

"You could almost say (the qualities) are unique, particularly the anti-browning, but we also have a non G (genetically modified) apple, which means when we ultimately internationalise the variety it will be acceptable right around the world," He told the Australian Broadcasting Corporation.

Good news for fruit salads everywhere then.
