Doctor, Doctor...
By Dave Hall
For all you hypochondriacs out there, Dave Hall continues his regular look at a some of the more unusual medical conditions, as well as some you thought you knew all about.
This week: BULLDOG SYNDROME.
Condition – Bulldog Syndrome, medically known as Simpson-Golabi-Behmel Syndrome (which is a bit of a mouthful), is a rare congenital genetic syndrome that can cause head and facial abnormalities. Sufferers often have pre- or post-birth growth that can lead to bulldog like faces (hence the name) with protruding jaws and tongues, fat noses and upturned nose tips. They can also be taller than average and have abnormalities of the feet and hands, often making them broader and shorter.
Contagion – Not contagious, but it is inherited in an X-linked recessive fashion, to you and me that means that in general, only males are affected, but females are carriers – bloody typical.
Danger of death – It’s not a fatal condition – unless you pick a fight with a real bulldog. | ||||
Incurability? – If you have the condition, you’ll certainly be afflicted in some way, but the severity of it will depend on how lucky you are. Counselling and parental/social care also help.
Likelihood of getting time off work – If you’re lucky you’ll be working as a dog trainer, or on the door of some swanky nightclub where you’ll be scaring away the ruffians with one brutal stare.
Brag-ability – If you have a face that looks like a stung wasp, you won't want to brag about it. |

Overall ridiculousness – A rare condition, so not one that you’ll come across very often. As it is sex linked, it’s advisable to stay away from women who look like dogs - good advice for life in general perhaps. |
More conditions to come soon:
Stiff-Man Syndrome, Niphablepsia and more.
