Top Ten Animal Mysteries: The Mothman

By Nicola Currie

The mothman statue - oooo scary.
A statue of the mothman in Point Pleasant. If you can't beat it - turn it into a tourist attraction. At least you can make the bastard pay his way.
The mothman, or owl man, has been regularly reported in the Charleston and Point Pleasant areas of West Virginia since the 1960s. Typically described as a large, winged human-like creature with burning red eyes, it has sometimes been claimed that it has no head and its eyes are set in the upper torso.

It is regularly described as hostile, often said to fly and chase people. Others speak of a feeling of evil emanating from the mothman; victims often suffer severe fear and psychological upset, and leading some to believe that they encountered the devil himself!

Worst of all – sightings continue to this day, although they may well be a product of over-active imaginations combined with multiple viewings of the huge and hideous statue erected in Point Pleasant.

Some people think that the mothman and thunderbirds might be one and the same thing. Other people think that those people are nutters.

Last sighting: April 2022, West Virginia.

Most likely to be:
a sandhill crane or an owl.
